Fruit mince was originally made from 13 ingredients symbolic to the Christmas story, to represent Jesus and his disciples. As well as the spices which were originally cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg (to represent the Three Wise Men), lamb or mutton to represent the shepherds and dried fruit such as raisins or figs. It wasn't until the early 20th century that mince pies represented what we know and love today, and only had a completely sweet filling without meat!
